Is It Worth It?

Members of society are constantly searching for methods of gaining power, money, and respect. Most will stop at nothing to achieve these goals, even if it includes completely disregarding the well being of others. This public service announcement has been created to inform many individuals of their carelessness and greed. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, the entire reason for Marlow, Kurtz, and the entire crew’s presence in the Congo is basically to find ivory in order to become rich. They ignore the natives and treat them like they are only useful when it comes to finding ivory. The crew covers up their motives by stating that they are “civilizing” the natives, when in fact, they are simply using them for their own gain.
Each portion of the announcement represents a certain idea. The ivory that is present in the varying quotes and the lower collage of images represents an object or idea that would cause an individual to gain the power or wealth that they desire. The images above represent individuals that could be hurt in the process. One can clearly see the pain in the eyes of the individuals of African descent because they know that they are being used and their rights are being ignored. The different words that are scattered across the top of the page are the underlying causes of why certain people might go to the lengths that they do in order to reach their goals. Many members of society are so desperate to get what they want that they do not care if they hurt or use people in the process. This public service announcement was designed to criticize the fact that many individuals places their personal ambitions above the well being of others in order to reach success. So is using others to get ahead worth it? You decide.
